3 Fournier Street in Spitalfields houses Marianna Kennedy’s calm and atmospheric studio and home, hidden behind a shopfront that almost looks derelict, but for the glimpse of her famous cast resin standard lamps with their bookcloth shades through the squares of glass.
Her house is probably better known to you thank you think, as it is regularly loaned out for photo shoots, and the brightly coloured lamps, arsenic green art and muted walls may already be familiar to you.
I came across her first through Ben Pentreath, who has been championing her lamps for many years, and I was delighted to find out about her wonderful coloured foliate mirrors too with curved or rippled glass in bright blue or pink, and detailed frames in black, silver or gold.
Her work perfectly combines contemporary sensibilities with an ability to sit in the most historic surroundings, and her renovation of 3 Fournier Street has clearly been a process of just that – designing and restoring, while carefully maintaining the spirit of the house.
